Wastewater treatment facility for BP Horst refinery in Gelsenkirchen

Hager + Elsässer GmbH is building a central treatment facility for wastewater in the Horst plant for Gelsenwasser AG / Ruhr Oel GmbH

In September 2009, Gelsenwasser AG and Hager + Elsässer GmbH signed an agreement for the design, supply, installation, and start-up of a central treatment facility for waste water in BP’s Horst plant. The clarification plant can treat up to 700m³/h of waste waters from production, and during periods of intense rain the far higher waste flow is temporarily stored for later treatment.

Investment of € 20 million

This project is the result of a partnership between Hager + Elsässer GmbH and Gelsenwasser AG.  Hager + Elsässer GmbH will design and build the complete, plant by October 2010, and afterwards, Gelsenwasser will assume the operation of the central treatment facility for waste water, initially for 15 years, via its 100% subsidiary AWS GmbH.

BP’s refineries in Germany are owned by its subsidiary, Ruhr Oel GmbH, which has invested about €20 million in this new facility.

Meets high environmental standards

The selected process is based on many years of experience at Hager + Elsässer GmbH in the operating area of refineries / petrochemical industry. The plant concept consists of multiple physical pre-purification processes and a completely biological clarification stage. The plant also includes a biological and energy-conserving, thermally regenerative exhaust treatment system.

Construction of the clarification plant has started recently. The circular concrete tanks, holding up to 10,000m³, will be finished toward the end of 2009. This extremely fast-track project will see the completion of the entire facility by the end of October 2010.
